The F-word

In our household, there is one word that is never said lightly. This word is the F-word: FLASHLIGHT.

Saying "flashlight" sends Ditka into a frenzy. If he's still, he'll run to the cabinet where it is stored, if he's running, he'll stop and tilt his head, staring at you, waiting for you to procure the treasured flashlight.

I've heard of cats enjoying chasing a laser-point, but I'd never seen a dog chase lights like our dog does. Ditka, a bichon frise, will bark his tiny head off when there's the slightest movement of light, be it the reflection of an opening door, a vase being washed at the sink, or, what sends his heart-a-pounding, the motion of a flashlight across the floor.

This can occasionally cause problems. Walking Ditka at night is an impossibility. One time, we had a refrigerator repairman come to the house, and he had to crawl back behind it, deep into our cabinets.

Then we noticed Ditka was missing. After calling him for a few minutes, we heard a voice from behind the fridge. "Ma'am, your dog's here with me." With the flashlight he had employed, the repairman had made a new best friend.

The following is a video of Ditka chasing a flashlight a year or two ago. I hope that you enjoy it, and remember, please comment if you have a similar story of your dog!
